Summer in Québec City

Québec in summer: a city that finally opens itself to the world.

VISITS AND DISCOVERIES

Old Québec in the sun. North America’s most beautiful fortified city

Walking distance from Monsieur Jean: 2 to 10 minutes

Summer is when Old Québec reveals its full generosity. Cobblestone streets begin to stir early in the morning, musicians settle onto Dufferin Terrace, and boutiques and galleries open their doors onto cool, carefully curated interiors. You can spend hours wandering this UNESCO World Heritage district — and honestly, that is exactly what we recommend.

Start at Dufferin Terrace at sunrise, when Château Frontenac stands against a still-soft sky. Walk down to Petit-Champlain through Breakneck Stairs, then follow Petit-Champlain Street toward the river. Take your time. It is a route that never feels the same twice.

Concierge recommendations

  • Thematic walking routes based on your interests: architecture, history, gastronomy
  • Seasonal recommendations for cafés, galleries and independent boutiques

Montmorency Falls: height, mist and summer panoramas

By car or taxi from Monsieur Jean: 20 minutes

Higher than Niagara Falls, Montmorency Falls are impressive year-round. But in fall, the cliffs become framed by blazing foliage, creating one of the most striking landscapes near Québec City.

Morning mist rises from the water. The sound of the falls echoes through the gorge. Red and orange maples surround the suspension bridge overhead.

The cable car offers an effortless way to reach the top, while the suspended bridge above the falls is absolutely worth the stop.

Île d’Orléans: Québec’s garden in season

By car from Monsieur Jean: 25 minutes

In summer, Île d’Orléans feels like another world. Strawberry fields open for picking in June, raspberries follow in July, and throughout the island local producers welcome visitors with a generosity that reflects one of Québec’s richest agricultural regions. One full loop around the island is enough to completely slow the pace — by car, or by bicycle for the more ambitious.

Not to be missed: lunch at one of the island’s countryside tables, where menus evolve according to what the gardens produced that very morning.

Concierge recommendations

  • Day excursion planning with customized stops
  • Reservations for local farm tables, vineyards and cheese makers

OUTDOOR AND ACTIVE EXPERIENCES

Baie de Beauport

Kayaking and paddle boarding on the river.

Taxi ride from Monsieur Jean: 15 minutes

Baie de Beauport may be Québec City’s best-kept summer secret. This urban beach along the St. Lawrence offers sandy shores, swimming areas and a full range of water activities: sea kayaking, paddle boarding and pedal boats. With Old Québec in the background, the setting feels unexpectedly privileged.

People lounge here, play here, stay here for hours. And in the evening, when city lights begin reflecting across the river, it becomes clear why locals return every summer almost ritualistically.

Following the river

Starting point from Monsieur Jean: 15 minutes on foot

Promenade Samuel-De Champlain is one of the city’s most successful urban spaces. In summer, the cycling path stretching along the river offers a ride that feels both athletic and contemplative; the St. Lawrence to one side, cliffs and Old Québec rising on the other. The Samuel-De Champlain station beach area, with parasols, loungers and its basin designed to feel almost connected to the river itself, makes for the ideal stop.

Walking and unwinding on the Plains of Abraham

Walking distance from Monsieur Jean: 12 minutes

In summer, the Plains of Abraham become the city’s living room. Two hundred hectares overlooking the St. Lawrence River, with shaded paths, open lawns and panoramic views where locals settle in as soon as the first warm days arrive. It is the perfect place for a morning run, a midday picnic or simply sitting with a coffee and doing absolutely nothing — which, in Québec summer culture, is entirely acceptable.

Concierge recommendations

  • Walking maps and scenic routes adapted to your pace
  • Picnic suggestions from Grand Marché before your stroll

GASTRONOMY AND ART OF LIVING

Old Québec terraces: eating and drinking outdoors

Walking distance from Monsieur Jean: 5 to 15 minutes

Summer in Québec City also means terrace culture. Along Saint-Jean Street, Saint-Louis Street and Place d’Youville, tables spill onto sidewalks as soon as June begins, and simply sitting outdoors with a glass becomes a way of experiencing the city itself. Québec City chefs excel at cooking simply and exceptionally well: local products, short seasons and genuine creativity.

The concierge team knows which tables truly deserve attention this season — the ones where menus evolve with the market and expectations are consistently met.

Concierge recommendations

  • Personalized terrace and restaurant selections based on your tastes
  • Reservations and recommendations for Québec wines and craft beers

Grand Marché de Québec

Summer served on a plate

Taxi ride from Monsieur Jean: 15 minutes

Summer is when Grand Marché de Québec reaches its peak. Stalls overflow with berries, fresh vegetables, aged cheeses and artisanal charcuterie. It is the ideal place to prepare a picnic for the Plains of Abraham or discover the producers supplying many of the city’s best kitchens. A morning very well spent.

Québec’s National Holiday

The city’s most festive night (June 24)

Walking distance from Monsieur Jean: 12 minutes
Date: June 24 annually

Every June 24, Québec gathers on the Plains of Abraham for the province’s largest National Holiday celebration. Local artists, fireworks, immense crowds and a shared sense of identity create an atmosphere that feels uniquely Québécois. From Monsieur Jean, the festivities are only a short walk away.

Festival d’été de Québec

11 days, 80,000 people, one unforgettable setting (early July)

Walking distance from Monsieur Jean: 12 minutes
2026: July 9–19

Festival d’été de Québec is one of North America’s largest outdoor music festivals. For eleven days, the Plains of Abraham welcome up to 80,000 people per night beneath the stars, with programming that blends international headliners and Québec artists alike. Rock, pop, electronic music and French-language performances all coexist here naturally.

At Monsieur Jean, the advantage is rare: concerts are twelve minutes away on foot, and the comfort of your room awaits afterward.

New France Festival:  stepping back into the 17th century (early August)

Walking distance from Monsieur Jean: 5 to 10 minutes
Typical dates: first week of August

Every August, Old Québec transforms itself. The New France Festival turns historic streets and public squares into a 17th-century setting filled with period costumes, historical reenactments, outdoor performances and artisan markets. Few events in North America feel this immersive — and Old Québec, with its centuries-old stone architecture, may be the only backdrop capable of making it fully believable.

Just For Laughs Québec, when comedy takes over the streets (late July)

Walking distance from Monsieur Jean: 5 to 15 minutes depending on venue
Typical dates: late July

Since arriving in Québec City under the Just For Laughs banner, the comedy festival has taken over theatres and outdoor spaces throughout downtown with programming that combines major Québec comedians and international guests. Several free outdoor performances around Place d’Youville and Saint-Jean Street make it one of summer’s most accessible festivals.

Grands Feux Loto-Québec.  Fireworks over the river (late July to early August)

By foot or taxi from Monsieur Jean: 20 minutes
Typical dates: late July to early August, Wednesdays and Saturdays

Each summer, international pyrotechnic teams compete above the St. Lawrence River in a synchronized fireworks competition set to music, with illuminated Québec City and Château Frontenac forming the backdrop. It remains one of the world’s most spectacular fireworks experiences. Taking the ferry from the Old Port is part of the ritual itself.

WELLNESS

Summer, the season of chosen slowness

There is a particular way of living summer in Québec City that has nothing to do with rushing. It means waking early to walk Old Québec before the city fully awakens. Returning indoors in the afternoon to escape the heat. Then stepping back outside in the evening, when the light turns golden and terraces slowly fill again.

At Monsieur Jean, rooms are designed for this rhythm. Blackout shades soften the light without erasing it, beds keep their promises, and the quiet, relative, precious, allows you to recover between excursions.

For guests wishing to go further, in-room massage treatments are available by reservation. Solo or duo. One hour or an entire afternoon.

Concierge recommendations

  • In-room wellness treatment reservations
  • Spa and wellness institute recommendations throughout the city

COMING NEXT

Autumn begins quietly, and Québec changes again (from September onward)

Summer does not disappear suddenly in Québec City. It fades gradually into something equally beautiful, but more intimate. Toward the end of August, evenings become cooler, maple trees begin their slow transformation and the city regains a certain calm after the intensity of festival season.

If your stay extends into September, you may experience two seasons within a single escape: the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec transforms the city into a UCI WorldTour circuit on September 12, while the first autumn colours begin appearing across the Plains of Abraham and Île d’Orléans.

The transition feels gentle. At Monsieur Jean, especially so.

Québec City in summer is generous, festive and occasionally surprising. It gives a great deal to those willing to truly observe it. At Monsieur Jean, the concierge team is here to transform each day into something carefully constructed — not a checklist of attractions, but a series of moments that remain long afterward.

Tell us what you are looking for. We will take care of the rest.
